HP OfficeJet Pro 8100 Review

If a budget (priced at US$100) color inkjet printer is what you’re looking for, look no further. The HP OfficeJet Pro 8100 is a great printer with low per-page cost and has faster sprint speeds than most color laser printers! This printer is best for people who don’t scan or copy things much, and just want quick and cheap color printing on normal paper. It’s one of the very few inkjet printers that can that can compete with color laser printers.

Ink Costs

The main attribute about this printer is it’s very low ink costs. If you use XL cartridges, cost-per-page numbers are ridiculously low at 1.6¢ for one black-and-white page and 7.3¢  for every color page. Even regular cartridges put up impressive numbers at 2.9¢ and 11.3¢ respectively. These prices are way below the average price of 20¢-per-page-cost of most inkjet printers. Even many laser printers, which offer 6¢ per-page, cannot match up with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8100.

Printing Speed and Quality

HP claims that this printer can print black-and-white pages in laser quality at fast rate of 20 pages per minute. What about color pages, you ask? 16 pages per minute. Not only will you be printing at extremely fast speeds, the quality of the printing will be sharp too. These speeds match those of laser printers, and blow away most speeds of inkjet printers. While speeds are high, the printer is not too great for printing pictures. But this isn’t a photo printer that’s being reviewed, this printer is for regular color printing; and that it does very well. Black-and-white pages are printed at resolution of 1200 x 600 dpi while color pages are printed in a resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi.

Connectivity and Features

The Pro 8100 comes with a 250-sheet input tray and has USB 2.0, Wi-Fi connectivity, wired ethernet, a LED display and auto duplexing. The technology of HP’s ePrint allows the user to send printing jobs to the Pro 8100 through any computer connected to the internet, smartphone or tablet.

Comparison With Similar Printers

Dell does not have a single purpose color printer other than the 1250c Color LED Laser-Class Printer, costing at $200. That it $100 more than HP 8100. A printer priced near the HP 8100 is the Canon PIXMA iP4920, but it is said to be a photo printer and per-page printing cost is much higher than the HP 8100’s. Epson does not have any cheap single purpose printers, the lowest priced inkjet printer that have is the WorkForce WF-7010, but it is priced at $200. Samsung only makes powerful office printers, so they have no contender here and Kodak is going down the drain business wise. The HP 8100 is definitely the best printer in it’s group.

In conclusion, HP OfficeJet Pro 8100 is a friendly priced, fast and not expensive to print with. Forget about the expensive laser or LED printers, the 8100 is a great pickup for the average person and will work in any small office or home.
